Casted American Chestnut Desk, by Nathan Standridge. Crafted in Barnardsville, NC using extinct American Chestnut, black and clear epoxy resin, and a vintage cast iron base. (Steeltek structural steel legs also available instead of cast iron upon request)
And it all started when we salvaged wood from a 100-year-old Springhouse door.
Months prior, we found a vintage sewing table in the trash, with the iron base still in perfect condition.
So the seed of an idea was planted, and we put the two pieces together to preserve and honor two beautiful things that had been long forgotten.
THE AMERICAN CHESTNUT
More than a century ago, nearly four billion American chestnut trees were growing in the eastern U.S. They were among the largest, tallest, and fastest-growing trees in the world. The wood was rot-resistant, straight-grained, and suitable for furniture, fencing, and building, and the nuts fed billions of wildlife, people, and their livestock.
It was almost a perfect tree until a blight fungus decimated the population nearly a century ago and made it "effectively extinct" in the 1950s.
That’s why this casted desk is one of a kind. All voids, cracks, and rot in the extinct wood have been filled with a food-safe epoxy resin to strengthen it and make it last forever. Once it is gone, there will never be another like it, although keep in mind this if this deck is not your cup of jam, I am always accepting custom orders. You choose the wood. You choose the color of epoxy resin to fill the natural cracks and voids. And I'll do the rest.
If you have any questions about the desk or would like to know more, fill out the contact form or email ironandpinewoodworking@gmail.com, and let’s talk.
